Fatal I-295 Crash in Mt. Laurel Twp. Kills 18-Year-Old

New Jersey State Police have released the name of the woman killed in a fatal crash along Interstate 295 in Burlington County.

 

Police responded to two motor vehicle crashes which occurred within close proximity to one-another on I-295 northbound in the area of milepost 43.6, in Mt. Laurel Township around 11:10 p.m.

 

Lyric Smith, 18, of Burlington, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, north on I-295. Smith failed to maintain directional control of her vehicle, drove off the roadway and struck the guide rail. The vehicle came to a final rest in the left center lane of I-295.

 

As Smith exited her vehicle. Peter Strautman, 64, of Punta Gorda, Florida was driving a Freightliner tractor trailer in the northbound center lane of I-295. Strautman attempted to maneuver into the left lane to avoid the disabled vehicle but was unable to. The tractor trailer subsequently struck the disabled vehicle and the pedestrian Smith.

 

Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene. Strautman did not sustain any injuries.

 

The New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and Incident Management Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

 

The accidents remain under investigation.
