Detectives for Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are on the scene investigating a fire that killed one person inside a house in Irvington Township this evening
According to a statement released by authorities, heavy fire broke out inside a basement apartment at 76 41st Street at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Crews rushed to the scene and observed smoke and flames coming from the structure.
Firefighters were able to make their way inside where they swiftly knocked down the blaze.
During their search, firefighters found a severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive person inside the basement.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the victim was pronounced dead.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
