The family of a 63-year-old woman fatally struck by a vehicle in the city's West Ward on Friday evening has released her identity to the public.

According to family members, Ms. Jacqueline Faye Dixon was struck by a vehicle while sitting in a chair on the corner of Speedway Ave. and 14th Ave. Friday evening.

Newark's first responders rushed to the scene at around 4:45 p.m. where they found Ms. Jackie seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle.

With several life saving tactics underway, EMS transported Ms. Jackie to University Hospital where she transitioned a short time later.

Initial reports from the family revealed that Ms. Jackie was sitting in a chair near the intersection, when a vehicle occupied by a male driver (only said to be a juvenile), drove up onto the sidewalk, striking her. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene according to the family.

The incident snarled Friday evening traffic causing bumper to bumper delays into East Orange after police closed the northbound ramp to the Garden State Parkway.

"Ms. Jackie (who lived nearby) sat there for years speaking to passerby's and offering cold drinks and water" a resident in the area said.

"Jackie was very proud of her adult children who were born and raised in the city of Newark and are now serving children" the resident said.

A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosector's Office confirmed the fatal pedestrian strike but could not immediately release additional information.

"Our office are looking into the fatal crash and will have additional information if and when it becomes available" the spokesperson said.

As family members prepare to release final arrangements on Monday for Ms. Jackie, the West Ward community remembers her community service and kindness.

Stay with us as we await a report from the prosecutor's office and the family's final arrangements.

Condolences to her family and friends.
