Fairview Man Charged with Possession, Distribution of Explicit Images of Minors

Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of William J. Smith, 37, of Fairview, on charges of Possession and Distribution of Explicit Images of Minors.

According to authorities, on Jan. 31st, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at Smith’s residence during the course of an Internet Explicit Images of Minors investigation.

The investigation revealed that Smith used the Internet to view, possess, and distribute digital files depicting nude or sexually explicit prepubescent and pubescent children.

As a result of the investigation, Smith was arrested on Jan. 31st and charged with one count of Distribution of Explicit Images of Minors and one count of Possession of Explicit Images of Minors in an amount greater than 100 files.

A judge orders Smith to be remanded to the Bergen County Jail and is scheduled for a first appearance in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court on Feb. 14th.

Acting Prosecutor Calo states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
