Newark

Newark and the North Jersey region are entering the second day of an intense heatwave, with dangerously high temperatures expected to push the heat index above 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 4:20 Monday morning, the temperature in downtown Newark had already reached 79 degrees. Forecasters say the heat will intensify rapidly, with a high near 99 and heat index values soaring to as much as 109.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, along with an Air Quality Alert for the region.

City officials are taking precautions to protect residents from the oppressive conditions. Superintendent Roger León announced that all Newark Public Schools will dismiss students at 1 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday, the final two days of the academic year.

Despite the early dismissals, end-of-year events and graduation ceremonies will proceed as scheduled.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s forecast calls for sunny skies and light southeast winds at 5 to 7 mph this afternoon. Tonight will remain mostly clear, with a warm low around 79 degrees.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and utilize air-conditioned spaces and cooling centers.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions as the heatwave extends into the week.
