Essex Prosecutor Identified Man Fatally Shot in Irvington Township

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II have announced that authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Irvington on Friday evening.

According to authorities, at approximately 6:30 pm, Irvington police officers responded to the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Headley Terrace on a report of a person shot. Arriving officers located a male lying in the street.

The male, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, was transported to University Hospital in Newark where he was pronounced dead at 7:15 pm, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The victim has been identified as Mr. Joseph E. Howard, 34, of Irvington.

This incident is being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Irvington Police Department.
