Essex Prosecutor Continues to Investigate Deadly Shooting of Man Found Inside Weequahic Park in 2018

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura are seeking help from the public in identifying the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting of Mr. Godfrey J. Jones, 25, of Newark.

Police say, Jones was shot on Aug. 6, 2018 at Weequahic Park while sitting on a park bench at 9:15 am. He died later that day at University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 5:27 p.m.

Information gathered so far from the investigation indicates that two men approached the victim and one fatally shot him.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program is offering an award of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this crime.
