According to information released by county officials, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones confirmed that Code Blue protections will remain in effect through Wednesday, December 17, at 8 a.m.

The declaration applies nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Code Blue protocols are activated when temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees or during periods of severe winter weather.

The measures are designed to protect individuals experiencing homelessness by ensuring access to warm, safe indoor spaces.

During a Code Blue, a countywide network of shelters and warming stations is opened.

These locations include public libraries, senior and community centers, school buildings, houses of worship, firehouses, and first aid squad facilities.

While many warming stations operate during daytime hours and may not offer overnight accommodations, participating shelters do provide overnight stays.

Some shelters also suspend daytime exit requirements, allowing residents to remain indoors during extreme cold.

County officials emphasized the importance of collaboration with community partners to safeguard vulnerable residents during harsh weather conditions.

A full list of participating shelters and warming stations is available through the county’s official graphic or by visiting NJ211.org.
