Emotionally Distressed, Pregnant Woman Attacks Sergeant at Newark Police Station

Newark

A police supervisor and a woman who said she was several months pregnant were transported to University Hospital for treatment after the woman reportedly assaulted officers inside the downtown Newark police station.

A preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 4:29 a.m., police inside the 31 Green Street station notified dispatch of an assault in progress on several police officers on the 4th floor of the building.

Officers arrived and found a sergeant suffering non-life threatening injuries after an emotionally distressed woman became belligerent then violently attacked officers who attempted to restrain her.

Officials have not immediately announced circumstances surrounding the incident or why the woman was inside the station house.

The woman is being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer at this time.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
