Elizabeth Police Chase Ends After Thief Crashes, Abandons Car

A Tuesday morning police chase across Elizabeth ended when a car thief crashes the stolen vehicle and abandoned it in a Newark street before fleeing.

The owner of the black 2000 Honda Civic called police early Tuesday to report that his car been taken from the 600 block of Montgomery Street and he was chasing the suspect that took his car in another vehicle, Lt. Daniel Saulnier said.

Officers spotted and tried to stop the vehicle on Spring Street as it approached North Avenue, Saulnier added. The suspect ignored the officer’s lights and siren and sped through a red light striking a 2002 Kia driven by a Roselle Park man who was unharmed.

Suspect continued driving through city streets into Dayton Street in Newark, where he abandoned the vehicle at the Seth Boyden public housing complex.

Suspect is described as black male, about 5-foot-8 wearing a white tank top and blue jeans.
