A woman and her son were inside their home when a large toppled onto their Edison home Monday morning.
According to authorities, firefighters responded to 28 Hillcrest Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. after a large tree fell on the home, collapsing a section of roof and sending branches through two interior floors.
Officials say the residents of 28 Hillcrest Avenue, identified as Maria Koundourakis, 66, and her adult son, escaped from the home unharmed before Edison firefighters, police and EMTs arrived.
“A large tree on their property broke under the weight of heavy snow and fell on this house, collapsing a rear section of its roof,” Deputy Fire Chief Andy Toth said. “Large limbs punched through the roof, through the second floor, and into its first floor.”
Police say Edison building inspectors have deemed the home unsafe and uninhabitable. Electric and water services were quickly turned off.
According to officials, Koundourakis and her son will be staying with relatives in Highland Park until repairs can be made.
