A young reader in Middlesex County is being recognized for reaching a major early literacy milestone through a popular community program.

The Edison Public Library announced that 3-year-old Atlas Lam-Fortes has successfully completed its “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” initiative, becoming the third child to reach the achievement since the program launched in February 2025, according to information released by library officials.
The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Edison Public Library, is designed to encourage families to read regularly with young children before they enter school.

Participation is free, and families track their progress through the Beanstack platform, earning prizes along the way as they hit reading milestones.
Atlas and his family began the challenge last summer, turning daily reading into a consistent routine.
His parents say the experience quickly became a meaningful part of their day, helping build a strong foundation for learning and a love of books.
Library officials say Atlas is also a familiar face at local branches, where he regularly attends children’s programs and explores new books alongside his parents.
The library credited its children’s programming and staff for creating a welcoming environment that supports early literacy.
Special recognition was given to children’s librarian Allia Nisa for her role in engaging young readers and helping guide families through the program.
Atlas joins other young participants who have completed the challenge, as the initiative continues to grow within the community.

Officials say the program highlights the importance of early reading habits and the role families and libraries play in preparing children for long-term academic success.
