Edison High School Resource Officer Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Car

Edison

EDISON – Authorities say, Officer Andrew Roy, a 16-year police department veteran, suffered leg and hip injuries at 8:10 a.m. today after he got pinned between a troubled student’s moving car and a parked vehicle outside JP Stevens High School.

The driver – who police describe as a distraught 18-year-old female student – fled the scene in a gray Volvo S-60, heading north on Grove Avenue. Police took her into custody a short time later near a Stop & Shop on Inman Avenue.

She is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Rutgers University’s Behavioral Health Care facility in Piscataway. Police have charged her with aggravated assault, obstruction and eluding arrest.

“My first concern is for Officer Roy’s health and recovery. Our officer sustained serious injuries while trying to calm a troubled young woman and prevent her from leaving school property,” Police Chief Thomas Bryan said. “Officer Roy demonstrated empathy and dedication to duty.”

Roy, 42, assigned as a high school as a resource officer, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for evaluation and treatment, police said.
