Students at Patrick Healy and John L. Costley Middle Schools in East Orange were treated to an unforgettable experience on Thursday, May 1, when they welcomed two accomplished NFL figures, Dontae Johnson and Sterling Lucas, for a special assembly.

According to information released by East Orange Public School officials, this inspiring event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Mayor Ted Green, Superintendent Dr. Christopher Irving, and the Urban League of Essex County’s Young Professionals.

It was designed specifically for eighth-grade students to hear firsthand about the importance of hard work, resilience, and following one’s dreams.

Throughout the assembly, Johnson and Lucas shared personal stories from their journeys to professional football, emphasizing the value of perseverance and determination both on and off the field.

The players didn’t just talk at the students — they connected with them in a meaningful way, answering thoughtful questions during a lively Q&A session and encouraging the students to stay focused on their goals.

The event left a lasting impression on the students, who were energized and motivated by the presence of such positive role models from the sports world.
