East Orange Man Sentenced in Passaic County to State Prison for Aggravated Manslaughter

Passaic County authorities reported that Quadir Whitaker, 37, of East Orange, was sentenced to ten years in New Jersey State Prison for first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter.

Officials reported that on October 4, 2019, Petra Rhoden, 43, of Paterson, was fatally shot while making a DoorDash delivery in the area of Harrison Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson.

Whitaker was arrested on October 21, 2019, after a joint investigation conducted by the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Investigations Unit.

Authorities say on September 6, Whitaker pleaded guilty before the Honorable Imre Karaszegi, Jr., J.S.C., to one count of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter.

Mr. Whitaker admitted that he acted as an accomplice during the incident by operating the motor vehicle used to transport the shooter to and from the scene.

The suspected shooter has not been identified and remains at large.

Officials say on October 13 Whitaker was sentenced to ten years in New Jersey State Prison, with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility under the No Early Release Act.

Upon release from prison, Mr. Whitaker will be subject to five additional years of parole supervision.
