East Orange Man Attempts to Withdraw Guilty Plea in Strangling of Pregnant Wife

An East Orange man who admitted strangling his pregnant wife on December 2013 is now looking to withdraw his guilty plea. 

On March 19, Babatope Owoseni, 35, filed a motion to retract the guilty plea he entered earlier this year in which he admitting to killing his 26-year-old wife, Fatoumata Owoseni, who was nine months pregnant. 

As part of a plea agreement, Owoseni pleaded guilty to an aggravated manslaughter charge rather than to face a murder charge which carries a minimum sentence of 30 years in prison. 

Owoseni remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $750,000 bail.

Under current state laws, Owoseni could not be charged with the death of the unborn child.
