An early morning fire in Newark sent two people to the hospital and displaced several residents Thursday, according to city officials.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., said firefighters were dispatched at approximately 3:19 a.m. on Thursday, to 162 Goldsmith Avenue after reports of a fire inside the building.

When crews arrived, they found flames burning on the second floor and extending into the third floor of the residence.

Firefighters quickly began suppression operations to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further through the structure.

Authorities said one adult and one child were transported to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Their conditions were not immediately released.

During the response, one firefighter suffered a minor injury to his hand, but officials said the firefighter was able to remain on duty.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at approximately 3:57 a.m.

As a result of the fire, three adults and one child were displaced from the residence and will be relocated.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit. Officials have not released additional details as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
