Early Morning Armed Carjacking Suspect Nabbed by Police in Newark

Police in Newark are reporting the arrest of Jeffrey Baker, 21, of Newark, for a carjacking that occurred early this morning.

According to police, at approximately 12:58 a.m., as a 58-year old male victim exited his 1999 Toyota Camry in the 200-block of 18th Avenue.

A male suspect armed with a handgun approached him and demanded his car keys, cell phone and other personal items police said.

The suspect then fled in the victim’s vehicle.

Rutgers University Police canvassing the area located the suspect, Jeffrey Baker, and the carjacked vehicle in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and West Kinney Street. Baker was found in possession of a handgun, the suspect’s cell phone and his personal items police said.

Baker was taken into custody and charged with Robbery, Carjacking, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession.

This is merely an accusation.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
