Off-Duty Cop Attacked, Robbed in Newark; Suspects Sought

Police in Newark seeks the public’s help in identifying the suspects involved in an assault of a Newark Police Officer Monday night.

According to a statement released by police, at approximately 11:05 p.m., police responded to Bloomfield and Mount Prospect Avenue on a call of a pedestrian struck and a person with a firearm.

Police say an off-duty Newark Police Officer was involved in a collision with another vehicle when the officer exited his vehicle after observing someone on the ground.

According to police, the officer was approached by a group of suspects who assaulted then took his cell phone, although he had repeatedly announced that he was a police officer.

Police say the other driver ran to safety and the off-duty officer was transported to University Hospital for treatment.

While police are actively searching for the suspects involved in this incident, we seek the public’s assistance in quickly identifying them and removing them from our streets.
