Drive-by Gunfire Strikes Male in Newark's South Ward; Suspects Fled in Vehicle Stolen from Aberdeen Township

Police in Newark are investigating a shooting that sent a male to the hospital on Saturday evening in the city.

Reports of shots fired had police rushing to the South Ward community of Lyons Avenue and Aldine Street at approximately 6:30 where officers arrived and found several shell casings, but after they searched the area, officers did not see a victim.

While police conducted their investigation at the scene, officials at Beth Israel Hospital alerted them of a male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the back who entered the emergency department at approximately 6:35 p.m.

Officials say the unidentified victim is in serious but stable condition.

Police are looking for a 2015 Ford Edge that was reported stolen out of Aberdeen Township according to authorities. The vehicle has a reported NJ license plate number "Z25-KFX."

Several suspects were in the car when one of the occupants began firing shots in the area for an unknown reason according to police.
