Downtown Newark Street Closures Announced for Governor’s Inauguration

Motorists traveling through downtown Newark early next week should prepare for significant traffic changes as the city hosts a major statewide event.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. announced that several streets in the downtown area will be temporarily closed on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, due to the inauguration ceremony of Mikie Sherrill.

 

The street closures will be in effect from 5 a.m. until 4 p.m. to support security and operational needs associated with the ceremony.

 

The impacted roadways include Center Street between McCarter Highway and Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard; Mulberry Street from Raymond Boulevard to Center Street; Rector Street from McCarter Highway to Mayor Gibson Boulevard; Fulton Street from Mayor Gibson Boulevard to Rector Street; Park Place between Raymond Boulevard and Center Street; East Park Street from Park Place to Mulberry Street; and Kitchell Street between East Park Street and Mulberry Street.

 

Drivers are advised to anticipate delays throughout the downtown corridor and are encouraged to use alternate routes during the closure period.
