Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the death of a man on Friday afternoon.
According to authorities, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Goldsmith Street on a report of an altercation.
Police said, arriving officers observed an unresponsive male suffering severe physical injuries upon their arrival at the scene.
EMS rushed the victim to Beth Israel Medical Center, where medical staff pronounced him dead at 5:15 p.m.
Authorities identified the victim as Mr. Marquez Robinson, 34, of Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Robinson died during an altercation with a family member.
This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy performed by the NJ Regional Medical Examiner's Office, according to Fennelly, who added that the investigation is ongoing.
Police have not arrested anyone at this time.
