Police announced today that a Brick man was charged after the death of his dog.
According to authorities, on July 1st at 5:48 a.m., area residents alerted the Brick Township Police Department to a sick or injured dog at a residence on Northrup Drive.
Officials say Officer John Scott arrived on location and discovered area residents assisting a dog who had been left out on the second-floor fire escape of the residence for several hours, in the extreme heat. Police attempt to locate the dog’s owner/resident was unsuccessful. The dog, believed to be a Cane Corso type, was unconscious and in severe distress.
According to authorities, two K-9 officers arrived on scene and quickly accessed the dog’s condition and with the assistance of neighbors tried to cool the dog with water. The dog was then lowered down in its cage to the ground and wrapped in a wet towel. Officer Keith Prendeville then carried the dog to the patrol vehicle and transported her to the Jersey Shore Veterinary Hospital on Route 70, Lakewood.
Officials say the dog was evaluated and treated throughout the night for life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, the dog’s condition deteriorated, and she succumbed to its injuries early Tuesday morning.
As a result of the investigation, the dog’s owner, Jonathan Correa was charged with failing to provide necessary care to an animal/living creature, exposing an animal to adverse weather conditions, and failing to provide a shelter of the proper size and failing to obtain a dog license. Correa was processed at headquarters and released on a summons.
The investigation is being conducted by Officer Jay Lampiasi and Officer Keith Donnelly of the Brick Township Police Humane Law enforcement Division in cooperation with the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.
