Dismembered Body Found in Newark South Ward Building

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed an investigation in the death of a person found inside an apartment building in Newark's South Ward Friday afternoon.

According to a preliminary investigation, police and detectives responded to 148 Chancellor Avenue, where they launched an investigation after finding several body parts inside the building before 1:30 p.m.

Homicide detectives were observed taking bags that contained evidence from a section of the building.

The Essex County Prosecutor's would only confirm one fatality but would not immediately release information on if the incident occurred inside the building.

It is not clear if the body parts were dropped off inside the building at this time.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
