DEVELOPING: Two Confirmed Fatalities After Car Crashes Then Burst Into Flames on Route 22 in Newark

Authorities are investigating a crash that caused the death of two victims and injured three others on a highway in Newark Tuesday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, the violent late-night crash happened at approximately 10:49 pm in the eastbound lanes of Route 22 near the Newark-Hillside border.

Police say the female driver of the vehicle somehow lost control of the car and crashed before it burst into flames.

The driver, a front-seat passenger, and one person in the back seat of the vehicle were transported to area hospitals suffering burns and other injuries.

Authorities said two other individuals -who were in the back seat of the vehicle- suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the investigation into the incident is in its early stages and the identity of the victims have not been released at this time.

None of the victims in the car are reported to be over the age of 20.

According to State Transportation officials, as of 12:26 am, there's a crash investigation on US-22 eastbound in the area of Weequahic Park in Newark. All eastbound lanes are closed.

Expect delays and use caution in the area.
