DEVELOPING: Truck Driver Severely Burned After Crash, Fire in Elizabeth

EMS rushed the driver of a truck to the hospital after a crash caused a truck to burst into flames this evening in Elizabeth.

According to preliminary reports from the scene, at around 8:30 p.m. emergency responders rushed to the vicinity of Route 1&9 near the Bayway Circle to investigate reports of a collision.

Upon arrival, police and firefighters found a fully involved truck fire in close proximity to a two-family house.

While firefighters attempted to extinguish the blaze, they found a badly burned male.

Witnesses said, a car lost control on 1&9, struck a pole then slammed into a truck that was at the gas station.

Crews worked to stop flames from extending to the house but there was significant damage.

Officials say PSEG crews were called to the scene to secure down power lines.

UPDATE 9:25 PM EPD: ”At approximately 830pm, an accident occurred around Bayway Circle, which resulted in hitting a truck who was at the BP gas station.

Our Fire Department responded with mutual aid.

Traffic on Southbound and Northbound 1&9 has been closed and is being diverted through Linden and surrounding streets.

The fire is under control. It is now a contained hazmat scene because of the fuel spill.

One injury has been reported. One house is involved in the fire and one other may have

been exposed. Bayway Circle will be closed for several hours. DOT is en route. Traffic lights at the circle need replacing.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
