DEVELOPING: Reports of Suspicious Packages Evacuate Schools in Newark

Police and officials at two schools in Newark evacuated two buildings at locations in the north and south wards after receiving reports of suspicious packages Wednesday morning. 

In the first incident, police were notified of a suspicious package at the Benjamin Franklin School located in the 40s block of Park Avenue around 6:45 a.m. 

Police closed off the area and began to search for the suspicious item. 

At approximately 7:10 a.m., police also received reports of a suspicious package at Chancellor Avenue School, located at 321 Chancellor Avenue. 

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office bomb detection unit and Newark Emergency Services Unit were notified to assist in the operation.
