DEVELOPING: Pedestrian Killed by Hit-and-Run Car in Newark’s South Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified of a pedestrian strike that resulted in fatal injuries in a section of Newark’s South Ward this evening.   

According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 10:38 p.m., police were called to the area of Elizabeth Avenue and Earl Street to investigate reports of an injured person.   

Upon arrival, officers found the severely injured, unconscious and responsive victim lying on the ground after a car struck them then sped away from the scene.    

Police said the unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene.   

Authorities believe a blue Ford Explorer hit the victim and continued driving on Elizabeth Avenue.   

The suspected driver remains at-large.
