Newark

A police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries after a pursuit ended in a collision this afternoon in Newark’s South Ward.

According to preliminary reports, Essex County Sheriff Officers attempted to pull over a vehicle wanted for a shots fire incident in the areas of Quitman Street and Clinton Avenue at approximately 3:20 p.m.

About an hour later, police spotted the driver of the black 2019 Mazda who sped away and led officers on a pursuit that touched off in several city wards including Irvington Township.

Authorities said police attempted to box in the car near the intersection of Bergen and Chancellor Avenue when the police cruiser crashed.
