DEVELOPING NEWARK: Woman Killed by Vehicle After Exiting Car on Route 1&9 in Newark's East Ward

There is an active investigation underway into a pedestrian strike that killed a woman on a highway in Newark's East Ward Sunday morning.

According to authorities, police have several lanes closed on Route 1&9 North express near Delancy Street after a woman was struck by a car just before 6:45 a.m.

Police say the unidentified woman exited her car on the highway for an unknown reason and was struck and instantly killed by at least two vehicles.

During the investigation, police noticed a child inside the car who is believed to be the woman's son. Police say the child was not injured.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been notified and will lead the investigation.

Avoid the highway or expect heave delays during the investigation. 1&9 North at the Pulaski Skyway has been shut down.
