DEVELOPING: Newark South Ward Search Underway for Suspects Wanted for Shots Fired at Police

New Jersey State Police Aviation, Newark, Kearny and Essex Sheriff Police Departments are in the 200 block of Weequahic Avenue searching for suspects wanted for a shots fired incident that occurred in Newark's East Ward this afternoon.

According to preliminary reports, at approximately 1:25 p.m., several suspects reportedly fired shots at police near the Dente tow yard on Doremus Avenue.

The suspect then ran from the scene and entered a blue navigator which led fast responding Kearny Police on a high-speed pursuit that briefly touched off in Irvington.

NJ State Police Aviation scrambled to the area and immediately picked up the speeding vehicle in Newark’s South Ward.

The aviation units reported to police that the suspects bailed from the vehicle near 229 Weequahic Avenue.

Police searching the neighborhood located four suspects fitting the description then placed them under arrest.

There is one other suspect at-large according to police.

No injuries reported.
