DEVELOPING: Newark Police Search for Man Who Reportedly Went for Swim in Passaic River

Police in Newark conducted a search in the waters of the Passaic River earlier today for the body of a man who authorities believe jumped into the water yesterday afternoon.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, Newark police were informed by a person that his friend allegedly jumped into the river for an apparent swim at 12:30 p.m. yesterday and never came back up.

Director Ambrose said that the man reported the incident at around 8 p.m. last night.

Emergency responders from the Newark Fire Depttment and NJ State police are combing and checking the river with a special camera in an effort to locate the possible victim Director Ambrose said.

So far, the victim has not been found Director Ambrose concluded.

It is not immediately clear why the incident was reported several hours from the time it happened.
