DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Large Fight Leaves Two Officers Injured in Newark

A fight that erupted in Newark's South Ward resulted in two police officers injured early this morning.

According to initial reports from the scene, police responded to reports of a fight in progress that happened in the area of Elizabeth Avenue and Branford Street at around 3 a.m.

Units arriving to the scene found several people involved in a physical confrontation according to reports.

Sometime during the altercation, a suspect reportedly pulled a knife and began to violently swing the weapon striking an officer reports said.

One of the officers was struck in the arm while the second officer was reportedly punched in the face.

Both officers were taken to University Hospital where their injuries were not reported as life threatening.

Police took several suspects in custody and have launched an investigation.
