DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Gunmen in Cars Exchange Gunfire in Newark

Newark

Residents in a Newark neighborhood scrambled away from home windows and tossed themselves on the floor after suspects inside two vehicles pulled up alongside each other and began to uncontrollably exchange shots this afternoon in the city.

The rolling gun battle happened at approximately just before 3 p.m. in the vicinity of 9th Avenue and 12th Street where police responded to frantic 911 calls reporting shots fired according to preliminary reports.

Fast responding Newark Police units arrived to find evidence that a shooting occurred -with property damage- but could not confirm an injured person at that location.

One car was struck by gunfire in the 90's block of 12th Street and one of the vehicles involved the gunfire exchange crashed into a parked vehicle, then the driver sped away from the scene.

Police conducted separate crime scenes where they collected multiple shell casings and canvassed the area for victims.

The motive for incident remains under investigation.
