DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Gunfire Causes Property Damage in Newark's South Ward

Newark

Police in Newark pursued a vehicle occupied by suspects who produced a gun at a location in Newark's South Ward then began to fire at unknown targets this evening.

According to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of Bergen Street and Avon Avenue at approximately 6:30 p.m. where police arrived at the scene and immediately secured the area after finding evidence that a shooting had occurred, but after they canvassed the neighborhood, officers did not find any victims.

Police put out a 'be on a lookout' to neighboring towns for a white Mercedes Benz occupied by several males who unloaded their guns in the South Ward neighborhood then sped away.

Officers on routine patrol spotted the vehicle in the vicinity of Fabyan and Nye avenues and attempted to pull the car over, but the driver ignored officers and accelerated at a high rate of speed away from police.

Police followed the car a short distance before losing it eastbound on Nye Avenue.

Back at the crime scene, officers noticed bullets struck at least one vehicle at that location.

The incident remains under investigation.
