DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Children Escape Vehicle Targeted by Armed Carjackers in Newark's South Ward

A horrifying incident that unfolded in the city's South Ward where an off-duty police officer fired their service weapon at suspects who initiated a carjacking with children inside a vehicle this afternoon according to reports.

Details regarding the incident are continuing to develop as we await an official word from The Newark Police department but according to preliminary reports, an off duty police officer was approached by armed suspects who pointed a weapon and tried to take the vehicle that had children inside in the vicinity of Schley and Hawthorne Avenue.

The children somehow were able to get out of the vehicle during the incident that ultimately had the officer fire shots at the suspects who made off with the car according to reports.

Police are on the search for the officer's black 2016 GMC, with a reported NJ licenses plate number "E72-KWC", that the suspects fled the scene inside.

EMS arrived at the scene to evaluate the children who did not suffer apparent physical injuries.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office are on the scene to assist in the investigation. It is not clear if the suspects were struck by gunfire at this time.
