DEVELOPING NEWARK: House Fire Kills One in Newark’s South Ward

The Newark Arson Squad and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office have been called to the fire scene that left one person dead inside a house in Newark’s South Ward this evening.   

According to a preliminary investigation, firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire burning inside a house in the 20’s block of Heddden Terrace around 8:40 p.m. 

Crews arrived and found heavy flames tearing through the first floor of a two-story house and fire racing up to the second floor, causing exposure problems.   

According to officials, firefighters were able to get inside the burning building, where they found an unidentified person dead on the first floor and at least one other person was reportedly rescued. 

More than a dozen firefighters stretched several lines to extinguish the blaze then place the fire under control at 9 p.m. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
