Newark

A mid-morning shooting that occurred in Newark's South Ward left a male dead and now has The Essex County Prosecutor's Office on the search for the suspect that killed him.

In the second fatal shooting in less than a full week for the immediate area, Newark Police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Ross Street, shortly before 10 a.m., where first arriving units found a severely injured male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the head according to reports.

Residents told RLS Media that while police taped off the area, EMS arrived at the scene and assisted the unconscious victim.

Residents in the area say EMS drove away from the scene with the victim inside. "There were no lights and sirens while EMS made their way to the hospital."

According to the Essex Prosecutor's Office, on February 7th, Mr. Fred C. Sims, 29, of Newark was fatally shot in the 900 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue.

Sims was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m. the prosecutor said.

Authorities have not released the identity of this morning's shooting victim.
