The Essex County Prosecutor's Office leads an investigation into a shooting that killed a person near a football field in Maplewood on Sunday night.
According to a preliminary investigation, at around 10 p.m., residents on the Burr Road side of Underhill Field dialed 911 when they heard multiple gunshots rang out in the area.
When officers arrived at the scene, they taped off the street after finding an unidentified person struck by gunfire.
The victim was pronounced dead a short time later, officials confirmed.
Residents said several juveniles ran from the area and remain at large.
Maplewood Police Chief Jimm DeVaul told RLS Media that The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating this incident.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
