DEVELOPING: Firefighter Dead, Another Critical Inside Newark North Ward Firehouse

Authorities are investigating the death of a firefighter found inside a firehouse in Newark’s North Ward Saturday morning. 

A preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 10:55 a.m., EMS units were requested at the firehouse located at 269 Park Avenue; Engine 15 Ladder 7. 

Upon arrival, police found Captain Carlos Rivera and the second firefighter unconscious and responsive inside the building. 

Both men were rushed to University Hospital in cardiac arrest. 

Captain Rivera was pronounced dead and the other firefighters is currently in critical condition. 

Authorities are looking into what caused public servants’ injuries at this time. 

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was notified of the incident and a spokesperson said it does not appear to be a homicide at this time. 

UPDATE: Captain Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene, the other unconscious and unresponsive retired firefighter was transported to the hospital by his colleagues in cardiac arrest.  Approximate time of incident 7 a.m.
