DEVELOPING: Amtrak Train that Picked Up Passengers in Newark Crashes in South Carolina

An Amtrak train that originated from New York Penn Station then picked up passengers in Newark on Saturday, crash early Sunday morning in South Carolina leaving two people dead and about 60 injured.

According to a statement released by Amtrak, Silver Star Train 91, which was carrying eight crew members and 139 passengers, collided with a CSX train near Cayce, S.C., around 2:35 a.m.

The impact of the crash caused the lead engine to derailed, as well as some passenger cars,” Amtrak said in their statement.

According to a Twitter post sent by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina as of 5:45 am at least two people were killed, and emergency crews were tending to at least 50 injured.

Lexington County Sheriff officials said on Twitter that the crash occurred near Charleston Highway and Pine Ridge Road close to Pine Ridge, S.C.

There is no immediate word on if any of the injured were residents of Newark or any parts NJ.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
