New Jersey

‘Devon's heart was successfully transplanted to save the life of a 15-year-old girl, his liver saved a 57-year-old man, and his kidneys saved a 24-year-old man and a 61-year-old man’.

Family members and friends of the late Mr. Devon Lewis, 23, of Neptune, will be walking together as part of the "Team Devon" 5K team to honor his memory and show their support for NJ Sharing Network's life-saving mission.

NJ Sharing Network officials told RLS Media that Devon passed away unexpectedly on April 26, 2022, after suffering a severe asthma attack, which led to cardiac arrest.

The beloved son of Ms. Karen Lucas and Mr. Michael Lewis, Devon graduated from Neptune High School and attended Lincoln Technical Institute, where he earned an HVAC certification.

“Devon became a hero by saving the lives of others. His spirit and memory will live on forever, and we are excited to celebrate his life during NJ Sharing Network’s 5K event,” -Devon's Mother, Karen.

His loved ones will never forget his selfless nature in caring for the needs of others.

Officials say on Saturday, May 20, 2023, thousands of organ and tissue transplant recipients, donor families, living donors and dedicated volunteers and advocates will come together in Ocean Grove for NJ Sharing Network's 5K Celebration of Life Walk and USATF Certified Race.

The 5K Celebration of Life is one of the Garden State's most significant and most-recognized charitable events.

Funds raised support the Sharing Network Foundation in its commitment to saving lives through clinical advancement, family support, public awareness, and education about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

"Our hearts were broken when we received the devastating news in the hospital that Devon was brain dead due to the loss of oxygen to his brain," said Karen, Devon's mother.

"Our beloved son was gone. At that time, Devon's father and I spoke with the caring staff of NJ Sharing Network about organ and tissue donation. We went home that evening and discussed it further. We recognized that Devon had the chance to help others and we said 'yes' to donation."

NJ Sharing Network officials said Devon's family has received heartwarming letters from some of the organ and tissue transplant recipients whose lives were saved and enhanced thanks to Devon's gifts.

Officials said Devon's tissue donations also enhanced the quality of life for those suffering from chronic pain and impaired mobility.
