Deadly Shooting Outside of Downtown Newark Bar Under Investigation

Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a shooting that left one person dead and another injured outside a bar in Newark's Downtown Friday morning.

According to a preliminary investigation, a hail of early-morning gunfire rang out in the vicinity of the City Lounge located at 225 Washington Street just before 2 a.m.

Officers from around the city raced to the scene and quickly taped off the area when they found a severely injured unidentified person suffering bullet wounds at that location.

Authorities said the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.

While investigators began to secure the scene and check for additional victims, officials at St. Michael's Hospital notified them that a gunshot victim entered the emergency department suffering a bullet wound in their neck.

Homicide

The patient's condition was only reported as serious at this time. Police say the suspect reportedly ran from the scene and is at large.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined.
