DAY OF SERVICE: Newark Organization Feed, Clothes The Less Fortunate at Penn Station

Newark

An organization that has been recognized for their service by President Barack Obama for feeding and clothing hundreds of less fortunate people has again provided their humanitarian service to the Newark East Ward community on this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The Kinnard Family Helping Hands "KFHH" distributed clothes, food, and other items at The Peter Francisco Park just outside of Penn Station this morning at 10 a.m.

According to Chief Administrator Florence Kinard Mason, KFHH began in 2014 as a memory to her mother the late Janice Smallwood Kinard and is an organization whose mission is to feed the less fortunate.

"We have been blessed since 2014 and have grown considerably to the point where we have been able to provide for thousands since our existence," Kinard-Mason said.

In its fourth year of handing out items on Dr. Martin Luther King holiday Kinard-Mason said assistance from the City of Newark, local small businesses, and other organizations has been extraordinary.

"I decided on serving in the small park behind Newark Penn Station, not too far from where I work because of my familiarity with the community and I use to Penn Station daily so I knew there was a need," Kinard-Mason said.

In a letter to the organization, President Obama praised the Newark organization for its "generosity and compassion."

"The type of kindness and compassion you've shown throughout your life is what changes our country for the better each day, and I can only imagine how proud your mother must have been" the president's letter said.
