Newark and much of North Jersey are starting the week with oppressive heat and humidity, with temperatures expected to feel like they are over 100 degrees as a heatwave settles in.
As of early Monday morning, it’s 79 degrees at Mayor Kenneth Gibson Boulevard and Market Street in downtown Newark.
Forecasters are urging residents to take precautions, as the combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to make conditions feel dangerous throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny with a high near 95 degrees and heat index values reaching as high as 98.
Winds will remain light out of the north at 3 to 6 mph.
Tonight, skies will be mostly clear with a low around 76. Officials recommend staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors during peak hours, and utilizing air conditioning or local cooling centers.
