Crews Work to Contain 1,500 Gallon Oil Spill in Elizabeth

A 1,500-gallon oil spill in the area of Arthur Kill this afternoon has authorities investigating.

The Elizabeth Fire Department, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the United State Coast Guard and FDNY marine unit were called to

a spill in the area of 534 South Front Street sometime around 5:30 p.m. due to possible water way impact on the Arthur kill.

According to city officials, crews were evaluating the scene, where a rail car had leaked a large amount of number 6 fuel oil, which appears to be near a sewer line at this time.

The spill remains under investigation.
