Court Grants Lawsuit Defendant's Request to Release Short Hills Mall Victim's Tax Returns

Newark

A Superior Court judge has granted one of the defendant's request to obtain access to additional tax returns of Dustin Friedland, Hoboken attorney killed in a fatal carjacking at The Short Hills Mall.

Among the defendants in the lawsuit filed by Frieand's widow, Jaime Schare Friedland, are the mall's owners, Michigan-based Taubman Centers, Inc., and Universal Protection Service, which has provided security services to the mall.

On Dec. 18, Judge James S. Rothschild, ordered that the Universal Protection Service in addition to the 2009 through 2013 tax returns already received, the company shall now be provided tax returns for 2003 through 2008.

Jaime Schare's attorney filed a motion against the subpoena stating that the request is "invasive, burdensome and not likely to lead to relevant evidence," according to the brief.
