County Officials Break Ground on Athletic Improvements at Irvington Park

Irvington Township

Essex County officials gathered in Irvington on Wednesday to announce a series of improvements that will modernize the athletic facilities at Essex County Irvington Park, including upgrades to the park’s softball fields and nearby soccer field.

According to Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr., the project will feature the installation of synthetic infield playing surfaces on both softball fields while maintaining natural grass in the outfield areas.

The improvements are part of the county’s continuing effort to enhance recreational facilities throughout the Essex County Parks System.

“Our athletic fields are heavily utilized by schools, recreation programs and athletic organizations. Making these upgrades will help us maximize use of the facility, reduce maintenance and get young athletes back on the field sooner after it rains,” DiVincenzo said.

The softball fields at Irvington Park are among the last remaining baseball and softball facilities in the county park system that still have traditional dirt infields.

County officials noted that synthetic infields require less maintenance, experience less wear and tear, and allow for quicker reopening following rain events.

In addition to the new synthetic infields, the project will include upgraded drainage and irrigation systems, new backstop and sideline fencing, covered dugouts, player benches, spectator seating, landscaping improvements, pathway repairs, new trash receptacles, and additional park benches.

The project also calls for the installation of sports lighting on the adjacent soccer field, expanding opportunities for evening athletic activities and community events.

Commissioner President Carlos Pomares praised the county’s ongoing investment in public recreation facilities.

“We do these groundbreakings pretty regularly in Essex County. This is an aggressive schedule, and we are pleased to be bringing these improvements to Irvington,” Pomares said.

State Senator Renee Burgess highlighted the importance of parks and recreation in strengthening neighborhoods, while Irvington Business Administrator Musa Malik commended the county’s continued partnership with the township.

Irvington High School softball coach Jenna Weiss said the investment will have a meaningful impact on student-athletes who regularly use the fields.

County officials noted similar synthetic infield projects have recently been completed at Brookdale Park, Yanticaw Park and Belleville Park as part of the broader initiative to modernize athletic facilities across Essex County.
