Community in Mourning as Third Victim Dies Following Newark Weekend Shooting

Newark

The heartbreak in Newark deepened this week after officials confirmed that 19-year-old Masi Rogers has died from injuries he suffered during last weekend’s mass shooting on Chancellor Avenue.

Rogers, who had been listed in critical condition since Saturday, passed away Thursday, becoming the third life lost in the tragic incident.

The shooting unfolded just after 7 p.m. near Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street, a quiet stretch of the South Ward where families were returning home and children were finishing their weekend routines.

When officers arrived, they found several victims struck by gunfire—including 10-year-old Jordan Garcia and 21-year-old Kia Mae Scott.

Both were rushed to University Hospital but did not survive.

Authorities later confirmed the identities of those killed: Jordan Garcia, a bright 10-year-old whose smile lit up his family, and Kia Mae Scott, a 21-year-old woman remembered for her warmth and her love of community.

Rogers, the 19-year-old who fought for days to recover, is now tragically added to that list.

Three others were wounded in the attack: Jordan’s 11-year-old brother, who is expected to recover, and 60-year-old Sheppard Miller.

Both remain in stable condition. Investigators have not released the name of the 11-year-old due to his age.

Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. say the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Authorities have not announced any arrests, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

To push the case forward, Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones has announced a reward of up to $10,000 through the Essex County Crime Stoppers program for information that leads to an arrest.
