Clifton Man Expected to be Released from Jail, Commits Suicide

A 55-year-old Clifton man was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead this morning after apparently hanging himself in his jail cell.

According to Passaic County Sheriff's Office spokesman William Maer, William Oviedo was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 4:54 a.m. after he allegedly tried to hang himself using torn clothing.

Oviedo was rushed to St. Joseph's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

The incident is under investigation by the Passaic County Sheriff's Office Special Investigation Division.

Oviedo was expected to be released today.
